Echoes of Antiquity: A Day Trip to Saintes and its Roman Amphitheatre

18 June 2026 | Places to Visit

Stepping out of the quiet, natural luxury of Le Boisdalon and into the pages of ancient history is easier than you might think. While the Charente countryside is famous for its rolling vineyards and sleepy stone villages, a short drive west into the heart of the historic Poitou-Charentes region reveals a city packed with breathtaking Roman heritage. For an unforgettable day trip, we always point our guests toward the beautiful town of Saintes, home to one of the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatres in France.

Choosing our Chambres d’Hôtes gives you the best of both worlds: the absolute peace and silence of our estate in Yviers, combined with seamless access to the deep cultural treasures of the region. After a restful night, heading to Saintes offers a magnificent journey back through time.

Walk in the Footsteps of Gladiators

The crown jewel of Saintes’ ancient past is undoubtedly the Amphithéâtre de Saintes (often called Les Arènes). Built around 40 AD during the reign of Emperor Claudius, this remarkable structure once held up to 15,000 spectators who gathered to watch thrilling gladiator battles and wild animal hunts.

What makes this amphitheater so unique is its striking location. Unlike the urban arenas of Nîmes or Arles, the amphitheater in Saintes is dug directly into a natural, green valley on the outskirts of the historic center. Walking down into the hollowed grassy arena today is a deeply atmospheric experience—the towering stone ruins are beautifully framed by overgrown trees, offering a quiet, almost mystical look at the passage of time.

Beyond the Arena: Exploring Saintes

While the amphitheater is a must-see, the rest of Saintes makes for a wonderful full-day exploration:

  • The Arch of Germanicus: A magnificent Roman triumphal arch originally built on a bridge over the Charente River, now proudly standing on the riverbank.
  • The Abbaye aux Dames: A stunning 11th-century Romanesque abbey that stands as a masterpiece of regional religious architecture.
  • A Riverside Stroll: The Charente River flows beautifully through the center of town. Taking a walk along the banks or renting an electric boat is the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Return to the Gentle Silence of Le Boisdalon

After spending your day exploring ancient ruins and bustling town squares, the drive back to Yviers feels like a welcome return to your own private sanctuary. As the city sounds fade away, the winding rural roads lead you safely back to our tranquil estate.

End your historic adventure by relaxing on the terrace or taking a cooling dip in the pool. Pour yourself a glass of local Pineau des Charentes, listen to the evening birds, and let the timeless silence of Le Boisdalon settle around you.
