There is a reason why some places capture the imagination completely—they feel less like modern towns and more like living fairytales. While the quiet, sun-dappled countryside of Yviers offers the ultimate peaceful sanctuary, the borders of the neighboring Dordogne department hold architectural and natural wonders that are completely mesmerizing. For our guests at Le Boisdalon, one of our absolute favorite, most highly recommended day trips is a journey to the enchanting town of Brantôme, affectionately known as the “Venice of the Périgord.”
Choosing to spend your holiday at our Chambres d’Hôtes means choosing an experience filled with local soul, far removed from the sterile, cookie-cutter environment of a standard city Hotel. Our Bed & Breakfast is designed to be your luxurious, calm haven, but it is also the perfect jumping-off point for exploring the breathtaking landscapes of southwest France. After a fresh breakfast on our terrace, a scenic, under-an-hour drive brings you to a town entirely encircled by water.
An Island Town Steeped in Legend
Brantôme is uniquely situated on an island naturally formed by a sweeping loop of the glassy Dronne River. The town is dominated by the majestic Benedictine Abbey (Abbaye de Brantôme), which dates back to the 8th century and was allegedly founded by Charlemagne himself. The abbey is famous for its independent campanile, which is widely regarded as the oldest bell tower in France.
But the real magic lies behind the abbey walls. Carved directly into the sheer limestone cliffs backing the monastery are ancient troglodyte caves. Walking through these damp, stone chambers, you will discover the famous, mysterious bas-relief carving of the “Last Judgment”—a monumental, eerie masterpiece sculpted into the rock face centuries ago by silent monks.
Why Brantôme Belongs on Your Holiday Itinerary
Brantôme perfectly balances profound medieval history with the breezy, romantic energy of a riverside resort. Here is how we recommend enjoying your day:
- See it from the Water: The best way to experience the town is by renting a canoe or taking a peaceful electric boat cruise. Gliding down the Dronne, passing under weeping willows and ancient stone arches, gives you a completely unique perspective of the historic buildings.
- The Pont Coudé: Take a romantic stroll across the town’s famous right-angled bridge, a unique 16th-century architectural marvel that offers beautiful reflections of the abbey on the water.
- Charming Boutiques and Riverside Dining: The island’s narrow, winding streets are lined with artisanal craft shops, local gourmet delis, and brilliant restaurants where you can enjoy a glass of Bergerac wine right on the river’s edge.
A Peaceful Return to Your Yviers Sanctuary
After a day spent exploring troglodyte mysteries, browsing local markets, and listening to the gentle lap of the river against stone walls, heading back to the total peace of Yviers is a true joy. As the bustling tourist paths fade away into the rolling, quiet hills of the Charente, you can feel the deep relaxation of Le Boisdalon calling you home.
When you arrive back, the ultimate comfort awaits. Find your favorite spot in our sprawling garden, pour a glass of local wine or Cognac, and listen to the absolute silence of the countryside under a canopy of stars. We created our Bed & Breakfast to be the perfect counterweight to your regional adventures—a place where you can unwind completely and process the day’s wonders in total tranquility. We would be absolutely delighted to help you plan your route and share our favorite lunch spots in Brantôme!
